Although the domestic box office performance of Fantastic Beasts 2 hints that interest in the Harry Potter series is waning, Disney is about to introduce a new YA franchise that just might be the heir apparent. Artemis Fowl is a series of books by Eoin Colfer that takes place in a science-fantasy world where humans live underground alongside fairies, trolls, dwarves and elves. Unlike Harry Potter, the protagonist of this series is actually a young criminal who sets out to restore his family’s fortune and although magic is involved, technology also plays a huge part. Directed by Kenneth Branagh (Thor), this has a significant fanbase to draw from, but whether it will bring in new audiences remains to be seen. Artemis Fowl hits theatres on Aug. 9th; check out the first trailer after the jump and see what you think.
