Jack Reacher Reboot in the Works Without Tom Cruise

When it was first announced that Tom Cruise was going to play Jack Reacher on the big screen, fans of the long-running book series were none too pleased. Many felt that the 5’7″ actor could not pull off a character known for his physical stature (Reacher is described as 6’5″ and 250 pounds in the books). The first movie ultimately ended up garnering decent reviews and made $218 million worldwide on a $60 million budget, but the sequel fared much worse (it made just $162 million and was panned by critics). Now it appears that the Jack Reacher movie franchise is dead but the character will live on in another form. Here’s what author Lee Child had to say:

“I really enjoyed working with Cruise. He’s a really, really nice guy. We had a lot of fun… But ultimately the readers are right. The size of Reacher is really, really important and it’s a big component of who he is. The idea is that when Reacher walks into a room, you’re all a little nervous just for that first minute. And Cruise, for all his talent, didn’t have that physicality.

So what I’ve decided to do is – there won’t be any more movies with Tom Cruise. Instead we’re going to take it to Netflix or something like that. Long form streaming television, with a completely new actor. And I want all those readers who were upset about Tom Cruise to help me out – participate in choosing the right actor for the TV series. We’re rebooting and starting over and we’re going to try and find the perfect guy.”

So yeah, of course it’s going to become a TV series, not unlike that other Jack (Ryan, obviously). It’s probably an ideal fit for a series like this, considering that Jack Reacher is a drifter who mostly just stumbles into episodic adventures. It will also potentially allow them to cast someone who fits the physical requirements but maybe isn’t a huge star. Are you looking forward to seeing a new take on Jack Reacher?
