It is a day of mourning for comic book fans as we are just learning that legendary comic writer and former Marvel editor-in-chief Stan Lee has passed away. Lee is credited with co-creating an insane number of iconic superheroes throughout his career including Spider-Man, the Hulk, the Fantastic Four, Thor, Iron Man and Black Panther. He had been suffering from health issues as of late and was known to have been battling pneumonia earlier this year, forcing him to cancel some public appearances. He was reportedly rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center today where he later died. He was 95 years old.
Stan Lee (born Stanley Martin Lieber) got his start in comics in 1939 working as an assistant at Timely Comics, which would eventually evolve into Marvel. He soon got his start penning stories for Captain America and at age 19 got promoted to editor. In the early ’60s he was tasked with creating a superhero team to compete with DC’s Justice League of America and worked with Jack Kirby to create the Fantastic Four, the X-Men and many other characters in a shared universe, pushing forward the medium and increasing the popularity of comics.
In recent years he had become more of a figurehead for Marvel and was known for his many colourful cameos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is believed that he had already filmed cameos for a few other upcoming movies including Captain Marvel and The Avengers: Infinity War sequel. Although there has been debate over how much credit Stan Lee truly deserves for some of his creations, there is no question that he was an artistic trailblazer and a brilliant businessman who changed pop culture forever.
