A live-action Jonny Quest movie has been bouncing around Hollywood for over two decades now with directors like Richard Donner, Peter Segal and Robert Rodriguez all having been attached to direct at one point. Rodriguez was the most recent filmmaker to be involved, but after co-writing the script with Terry Rossio (The Pirates Of The Caribbean series) he decided to step back and let someone else take the helm. Despite rumours that people like Justin Lin (Star Trek Beyond), Scott Derrickson (Doctor Strange), and Joe Cornish (Attack the Block) were under consideration, it appears that the studio has settled on Chris McKay instead. According to The Wrap, The Lego Batman Movie director Chris McKay will helm Jonny Quest for Warner Brothers. McKay comes from an animation background having worked on shows like Robot Chicken, Titan Maximum and Moral Orel but he already has a pair of live-action projects lined up in Dungeons & Dragons and Nightwing. No word on whether the Rodriguez / Rossio script is still being used but at the time the tone was being described as “Harry Potter inside an Indiana Jones movie.”
The studio is said to be pursuing a major movie star to play Race Bannon. Dwayne Johnson was rumoured to have been cast in the role back in 2009 (with Zac Efron as Jonny) and this still feels like it is in his wheelhouse. Forbes reported a couple of years ago that their more recent wish list included Idris Elba, Bradley Cooper and Will Smith. Are you looking forward to a live-action Jonny Quest movie?
