Flash Gordon Movie Gets Overlord Director

We’ve been hearing about the possibility of a Flash Gordon reboot for a few years now with Matthew Vaughn most recently attached to direct a new big screen version for Fox. The Kingsman series seems to be keeping him busy, however, with a third installment set to start shooting early next year. In the meantime, Fox is still eager to move forward with Flash Gordon and now they have chosen a new director for the project: Australian filmmaker Julius Avery, the man behind the upcoming Bad Robot horror flick Overlord. Matthew Vaughn is expected to remain on board as a producer. Hit the jump for more details.

According to Deadline, Julius Avery will write and direct a new Flash Gordon movie for Fox. Early buzz on his upcoming film Overlord seems to be positive, although most of that is coming out of the genre film festival Fantastic Fest which is probably a little biased. Avery also directed the action thriller Son of a Gun starring Ewan McGregor.

Avery is said to be a huge fan of the original comic and it is unclear whether his movie will be at all similar in tone to the campy 1980 film directed by Mike Hodges. That movie was heavily referenced in the 2012 Seth MacFarlane comedy Ted with Sam Jones even making an appearance as himself. Are you interested in a new Flash Gordon movie?

Ahh, I have fond memories of watching the 1980s movie five, yes, five times in the theater. So deliciously campy… and bad.

A reboot will not do it justice unless it has a new tone.
