No big surprises here, but some eight months after Black Panther hit theatres we can finally say that Ryan Coogler will be returning to the director’s chair for the sequel. Some might have assumed that he was shying away from making sequels in general after he opted not to direct Creed II. According to Coogler, however, his absence from that film was more due to scheduling issues than anything else. He did, however, take his time making a deal for Black Panther 2 but now Marvel has locked him in, which is probably a smart move considering that the first film could be in the running for Best Picture at the Oscars very soon. Hit the jump for more details.
According to THR, Ryan Coogler has closed a deal to write and direct Black Panther 2. Although follow-up deals for sequels generally happen quickly after a successful opening, Coogler did not want to sign on right away, instead preferring to explore his options. (If he had waited a little longer, he could have waited to see if Black Panther gets an Oscar nomination as well.) No release date has been set, but he is expected to start working on a script next year and possibly start production in either late 2019 or early 2020.
In the meantime, Ryan Coogler is currently developing a movie called Wrong Answer that will find him reteaming with Michael B. Jordan that revolves around the Atlanta school cheating scandal. Variety is also reporting that he may direct a new version of 12 Angry Men and that it may shoot before Black Panther 2 happens. Either way, he clearly has no shortage of opportunities right now and it’s nice to hear that he is not putting all of his eggs in the Marvel basket. Are you glad that Ryan Coogler is returning for Black Panther 2?
