Claire Denis’ latest film definitely had people talking after its world premiere at TIFF last month, and although the movie seemed to shock and frustrate some viewers, it had plenty of vocal supporters as well. High Life is her first English language film and also her first science-fiction film, obviously skewing closer to something like Solaris or Sunshine than a big budget blockbuster. The plot centers on a group of death row inmates who are sent on a suicide mission in space to harvest energy from a black hole. Meanwhile, the ship’s doctor is also conducting experiments of her own related to reproduction in space. Robert Pattinson continues his recent string of collaborations with visionary filmmakers here and the supporting cast also includes Juliette Binoche, André Benjamin and Mia Goth. High Life won’t hit theatres in the U.S. until next year but it arrives in France on Nov. 7th; check out the first trailer after the jump and see what you think.
