Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is expected to kick off next year with the release of Spider-Man: Far from Home, the follow-up to as-of-yet untitled The Avengers: Infinity War conclusion. However, other than that we don’t really know what is in store for the next batch of Marvel movies. We do know that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be a part of it and we also know that a Black Widow movie may finally happen. Now it appears that we can also add another movie to that list of upcoming projects: The Eternals. Hit the jump to find out what we know.
According to Variety, Chinese filmmaker Chloe Zhao will helm The Eternals for Marvel. Zhao directed the acclaimed western drama The Rider, which made waves at Sundance and has gone on to become one of the best reviewed films of the year. The choice is a surprising one and a bold move for Marvel considering that they don’t generally flock to directors that might fall under the auteur label. The script for the film is being written by Matthew and Ryan Firpo (Ruin).
Created by Jack Kirby in the ’70s, The Eternals are a race of super-powered humanoids that are the result of genetic experiments on early humans by a group of all powerful beings called the Celestials five million years ago. They also created a similar group of mutated creatures known as The Deviants. Clearly this will delve even further into the cosmic side of the Marvel universe and it seems a bit out there for the average viewer. Then again, most people said the same thing about Guardians of the Galaxy, so who knows? Are you looking forward to The Eternals?
