Despite recent wild and unfounded rumours to the contrary, Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson is still working on a brand new trilogy in the Star Wars universe. Before he gets to that, however, he is apparently looking to direct a smaller project of his own… one that in some ways brings him back to the same realm of his directorial debut, Brick. Johnson has reportedly written a script for an original murder mystery and now he has Daniel Craig lined up to star as the primary protagonist in the movie. Johnson had this to say about the announcement:
“I have been a huge fan and always wanted to work with him and as I worked on the script, trying to get it right, [producer] Ram [Bergman] and I were wringing our hands over who could be the detective… Then, serendipitously, we heard Daniel might have a small window, and it worked out. He’s an actor of extraordinary range, and we are looking forward to the fun of finding that modern detective, and collaborating with Daniel on creating a new Poirot.”
The movie is called Knives Out and it is described as “a modern day murder mystery in the classic whodunit style.” Johnson is a self-avowed Agatha Christie fan and has been thinking for over a decade about doing his own locked door mansion murder mystery. Obviously he is also a fan of classic film noir with Brick being heavily inspired by movies like The Maltese Falcon. Knives Out will reportedly be shopped at the Toronto International Film Festival this month and it is expected to spark a bidding war. Are you looking forward to a Rian Johnson murder mystery?
