Monday Morning Box Office Report: Crazy Rich Asians Makes a Wealthy Debut

Falling in line with expectations, Crazy Rich Asians topped the box office over the weekend, earning a solid $34 million over five days ($25.2 million over three). Given the strong reviews and audience response, it should continue to make money in the coming weeks as the rest of the month is looking pretty barren. Falling to second place, The Meg earned another $21.2 million domestically and continued to surge internationally, bringing its worldwide total to $314 million. In third place, Mile 22 opened with a mediocre $13.6 million, which may throw a monkey wrench in Peter Berg’s big plans to start a franchise with it. Elsewhere, Alpha opened in fourth with $10.5 million and Mission: Impossible – Fallout rounded out the top 5. M:I – Fallout has now crossed $500 million worldwide, but it won’t hit theatres in China until the end of the month.
