Monday Morning Box Office Report: The Meg Proves Bigger Than Expected

Going into the weekend there was a feeling that The Meg might be a decent late summer entry for Warner Brothers and that it had a shot at dethroning Mission: Impossible – Fallout. It turns out the giant shark thriller completely blew M:I out of the water with a massive $44.5 million debut ($141 million worldwide). That is way beyond expectations and quite a bit more than The Shallows and 47 Meters Down made in previous years, although obviously it had a higher budget and bigger cast. It is also the biggest opening of Jason Statham’s career not counting the Fast & Furious movies. Elsewhere Mission: Impossible – Fallout fell to second with $20 million followed by Christopher Robin in third. Slender Man opened in fourth with an unremarkable $11.3 million while Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman rounded out the top 5 with $10.8 million, making it one of his biggest hits in quite some time.
