At this point Disney’s live-action fairytales are bordering self-parody with their latest entry taking the holiday classic The Nutcracker and turning it into another slightly twisted fantasyscape a la Alice in Wonderland. Tim Burton didn’t direct it (he’s busy working on Dumbo), which might explain why it feels like a second rate knockoff. Instead Lasse Hallström (A Dog’s Purpose) and Joe Johnston (Captain America: The First Avenger) share directorial credit after Johnston was brought in for extensive reshoots earlier this year. Mackenzie Foy plays Clara, a young girl who gets transported to a parallel world in the midst of a war between gingerbread soldiers and an army of mice. With a star-studded supporting cast that includes Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, Jayden Fowora-Knight, Eugenio Derbez and Keira Knightley, this is really just filling a gap for Disney until Mary Poppins Returns arrives in December. The Nutcracker and the Four Realms hits theatres on Nov. 2nd; check out the new trailer after the jump and see what you think.
