In honour of James Baldwin’s birthday, director Barry Jenkins (Moonlight) has released the very first trailer for his upcoming film If Beale Street Could Talk, an adaptation of Baldwin’s 1974 novel of the same name. The movie stars Kiki Layne and Stephan James as Tish and Fonny, a couple who fall in love in Harlem in the early ’70s before Fonny is falsely accused of a crime he didn’t commit. The trailer doesn’t get much into the plot, preferring instead to show off James Laxton’s cinematography and just generally setting a mood. If Beale Street Could Talk will premiere at TIFF in September before hitting theatres on Nov. 30th and it seems like there is a good chance Jenkins will be in the Oscar race again this year. Check out the trailer after the jump and let us know what you think.
