Although it’s been almost 30 years since it was released, Home Alone remains one of Fox’s highest grossing movies of all time (domestically, at least), but more importantly it has become a holiday staple that people revisit every Christmas. Over the years, they have tried to exploit the success of the original with a series of increasingly terrible sequels, two of which were made for TV (a fifth installment called Home Alone: The Holiday Heist came out as recently as 2012). This week, however, it appears that Fox has found a unique way to play on the original without resorting to a sequel or remake. Hit the jump for the full scoop.
According to Deadline, Fox is developing an R-rated comedy called Stoned Alone which is a weed-fueled parody of the original Home Alone. The idea was hatched by Fox exec Matt Reilly and a script has since been written by Kevin Burrows and Matt Mider (Gentlemen Lobsters, The Package). Augustine Frizzell (Never Goin’ Back) is attached to direct while Ryan Reynolds will produce. No word on whether Reynolds will also star. The plot synopsis is as follows:
“It centers around a twenty-something weed growing loser who misses the plane for his holiday ski trip. He makes the best of things by getting high. Paranoia sets in and he believes he hears someone break into his house. Turns out thieves have broken in. Fully stoned and fueled by paranoia, he tries to thwart the thieves and defend his castle.”
The idea sounds like it has potential to me and it will be interesting to see if they make any direct ties to the original movie. Let’s face it, current day Macaulay Culkin seems like a perfect fit for this project. Frizzell’s directorial debut Never Goin’ Back is also a stoner comedy of sorts that made waves at Sundance and will be released by A24 next month. Are you looking forward to Stoned Alone?
