After building up his acting cred with Oscar-nominated performances in both Moneyball and The Wolf of Wall Street, Jonah Hill is once again looking to grow artistically with his first project as a writer and director: a movie called Mid90s. Despite what you might expect, this is not an Apatow-style R-rated comedy but rather a coming of age drama about a young skater kid growing up in Los Angeles in the 1990s. Yes, there is some ’90s nostalgia porn here for those are into that sort of thing, but based on the first trailer, this is definitely a lot grittier than I expected (Hill has mentioned Larry Clark’s Kids as a major influence). The cast includes Katherine Waterston and Lucas Hedges but it is Sunny Suljic (the voice of Atreus in God of War) as 13-year-old Stevie who takes centre stage here. Do you think Jonah Hill can pull something like this off? Mid90s hits theatres on Oct. 19th; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.
