Monday Morning Box Office Report: The Equalizer 2 Upsets Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again

Although Universal’s Mamma Mia! sequel was expected to top the box office over the weekend, the musical ultimately fell just a little short of the mark while Denzel Washington quietly delivered another hit. The Equalizer 2 earned an estimated $35.8 million, just slightly more than its predecessor, allowing it to slip past Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again to take the victory. Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again made $34.38 million, which is still one of the best debuts ever for a musical and more than the original made back in 2008. Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation dropped to third, while Ant-Man and the Wasp and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom rounded out the top 5. Elsewhere, Unfriended: Dark Web opened in ninth place with $3.5 million. In other news, this is apparently the first weekend where eight of the top ten movies at the box office were sequels… go figure.

1. The Equalizer 2 — $35.8M
2. Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again — $34.4M
3. Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation — $23.2M
4. Ant-Man and the Wasp — $16.1M
5. Incredibles 2 — $11.5M
6. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom — $11M
7. Skyscraper — $11M
8. The First Purge — $5M
9. Unfriended: Dark Web — $3.5M
10. Sorry to Bother You — $2.8M

I came this close (*pinches fingers*) to going to see Mama Mia: Here We Go Again, but rain kept me home.

  • Colin

It’s a very solid musical, if you’re into that sort of thing

  • Jake

I know that we are now in the era of the sequel and have been for sometime, but I take solace in the fact that only one of these eight sequels is part of the MCU.
