After the recent announcement that Keri Russell may be joining Star Wars: Episode IX, we’ve got more big Star Wars casting news this week, only this time it involves bringing back a beloved character rather than introducing a new one. It would seem that all of the buzz surrounding Donald Glover’s performance in Solo: A Star Wars Story has renewed interest in the fate of that intergalactic scoundrel, Lando Calrissian. Now J.J. Abrams is reportedly bringing him back for Episode IX although the extent of the role is not yet known. Hit the jump for more info.
According to THR, Billy Dee Williams has agreed to reprise his role as Lando Calrissian for the as of yet untitled Star Wars: Episode IX. He was recently forced to cancel an appearance at an upcoming convention due to a conflict with a movie schedule and sources have since confirmed it was for Episode IX. Although he hasn’t appeared on screen since Return of the Jedi in 1983, he has continued to voice Lando in various video games and animated series including Star Wars: Rebels.
This should be a big win for Disney and Lucasfilm as they attempt to placate fans who were disappointed with Star Wars: The Last Jedi. It could also help replace the “charming rogue” factor that was missing without Harrison Ford appearing in that film and could give Chewbacca another old friend to spar with.
