Following up on last year’s acclaimed film The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos is back again this year with another exploration of the dark and absurd sides of human nature. This time he is moving to a period setting: early 18th century England to be exact. Olivia Colman plays the volatile Queen Anne, who has fallen ill and is tended to by her close friend Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz). Lady Sarah also assumes many of the Queen’s responsibilities behind the scenes but when an ambitious new servant (Emma Stone) arrives, a power struggle ensues. The Favourite looks like a much more strange and savage version of Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette and it hits select theatres right in the midst of awards season on Nov. 23rd.
