Jared Leto to Play Morbius the Living Vampire for Sony

Following up on this week’s previous news about a potential Silk spin-off, there has been another major development in Sony’s burgeoning Spider-Man cinematic universe. One of the various Spider-Man spin-offs that has been in development since last year is a movie based on Morbius the Living Vampire, a villain / anti-hero with vampire-like abilities. Now this week we are hearing that the project has a director and a major A-list star is stepping up to take on the lead role. Hit the jump for the full scoop.

According to THR, Jared Leto has signed on to star in a Spider-Man spin-off called simply Morbius for Sony Pictures. He will play Dr. Michael Morbius, a scientist with a rare blood disease whose attempts to find a cure end up turning him into a vampire of sorts with a need to drink blood and abilities that include hypnosis, super strength and a healing factor. The movie will be directed by Daniel Espinosa, who previously directed the sci-fi thriller Life for Sony, which coincidentally some fans claimed could have acted as an unofficial Venom prequel.

Jared Leto is still attached to play The Joker in more DC movies and is the second major actor to jump from the DC universe over to Spider-Man after Tom Hardy went from playing Bane to Venom. This sounds like a pretty goofy character to get his own movie and it’s hard not to imagine Leto going completely over the top with it. Then again, whether or not it even gets made will really depend on how successful Venom is later this year. Are you looking forward to Morbius?
