ABC Greenlights Roseanne Spin-Off Series The Conners

Less than a month after ABC decided to cancel Roseanne as a result of a racist tweet by Roseanne Barr, ABC has found a way to bring back the show without her involvement. This week the network has announced a series order for a new spin-off tentatively titled The Conners. All of the primary cast members minus Roseanne will be returning, including John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, Sara Gilbert, Lecy Goranson and Michael Fishman, along with the same creative team behind the scenes. The cast had this to say about the announcement:
“We have received a tremendous amount of support from fans of our show, and it’s clear that these characters not only have a place in our hearts, but in the hearts and homes of our audience. We all came back last season because we wanted to tell stories about the challenges facing a working-class family today. We are so happy to have the opportunity to return with the cast and crew to continue to share those stories through love and laughter.”
Roseanne Barr will have no financial or creative involvement in the new show, but says she “agreed to the settlement in order that 200 jobs of beloved cast and crew could be saved.” It is not yet known how they will explain her character’s absence on the show. The first season of The Conners will consist of 10 episodes and is expected to air in fall 2018, taking over Roseanne‘s Tuesday evening time slot. Are you happy to see The Conners return to television without Roseanne?
