An American here to chime in. I watched Mr. Dress Up, BUT I am close to the Canadian border, so may have watched it on CFTO or CBC.

Mr. Rogers was boring, but there is a narrow age-range he did appeal to. I mean, obviously, because we all knew who he was, the lyrics to the song, the characters, and what the show was about, so we all must have watched it – at least for a little while.

Don’t think anyone mentioned that Annie (Collette) was in reality trying to protect /prevent her children from carrying on the family curse while also battling her genetic inclinations to worship Paimon. That was a subtle and clever revelation that immediately reminded me of the best of Shyamalan.

Peter was Annie’s biological son as she tried to abort him and failed. She kept him away from the grandmother when he was a baby, which is why Peter wasn’t influenced.

There is something very creepy about the grandmother wanting to breastfeed Charly, which could be why the daughter was susceptible to the occult. I think Charly was harboring Paimon within her until her death. The seance ( a ruse by Joanie to contact “Charly”) brought King Paimon back who was then harbored in Annie until Peter was killed.

Decapitations are an offering to Paimon.

re: Mr. Rogers show. You guys might lose alot of American listeners due to Frank’s rant. I could see alot of us neo-libs and progressive listeners siding with Trump and boycotting Canadian podcasts for this one.

Frank (for sure) and Sean (likely) are putting Mr. Rogers show in the wrong context vis-a-vis targeted age range for Mister Rogers Neighborhood, which, as the Wikipedia page helpful points out, “is aimed primarily at preschool ages 2 to 5.”

Maybe for some modern context – basically if you just aged out of Teletubbies and have some language aptitude, but before you graduated kindergarten, Mr. Rogers was your jam.

You would learn things like how to tie your shoes, why it’s good to be nice, that everyone gets lonely and sad. If you were impatiently channel surfing between talk shows, 700 Club, and Mr. Rogers Neighborhood, you were too old for the show.

For alot of Americans, Mr. Rogers is emotionally imprinted on us at toddler-age memories like a surrogate parent. Thus as I understand it there is alot of crying during screenings of this doc.

Frank, you need to calm down though. This shouldn’t be so important to you that you starts talking fast and loud like Joe Pesci in Goodfellas. But we know, we know – you doesn’t really care if you were objectively right or wrong, it was just for good podcasting!

As a kid I did think it was boring. The same goes for Sesame Street. As an adult I can appreciate Mr. Rogers as a kind hearted man, but at the time that didn’t mean much to me from an entertainment standpoint.

Interesting point about the emotional imprinting thing. I guess that’s what surprised me most was the overwhelming emotional attachment people had to Mr. Rogers as opposed to just the fact that they watched the show. But I guess maybe I should just watch the documentary.

I loved Hereditary but at this point I wonder if A24 is surprised by the D+ Cinemscore/hatred from mainstream audiences given the audience reception to The VVitch and It Comes At Night.

That is true, but Tess isn’t in this one and Saul is sidelined for most of the movie. There are a couple of other people who kind of help, so maybe it all balances out? It’s kinda confusing though.

Spot on I think. It’s possible that the grandmother was able to perform some ritual with Charlie that she wasn’t able to with Peter, so Charlie was likely Paimon her entire life, just unknowingly. Signs like the bird hitting the window and the grandmother burning in the field could be revelations to try to awaken Paimon.

Another interesting piece is that Annie’s uncle starved himself to death, possibly meaning that Ellen attempted to bring Paimon into him but he was not vulnerable and took his own life in opposition.
