With Transformers: The Last Knight becoming the lowest grossing Transformers movie to date, it seems like public interest in the once invincible blockbuster franchise is finally starting to wane. Clearly Paramount needs to diversify or die and their solution is a prequel called Bumblebee, the first live-action Transformers movie not directed by Michael Bay. The movie stars Hailee Steinfeld and John Cena and it takes place in the ’80s with robot designs hewing closer to the original cartoon (Bumblebee takes the form of a Volkswagen Beetle, for example). That being said, the overall visuals are still very much in line with the established Michael Bay style guide and it doesn’t really feel all that different. Is this too little too late? Bumblebee is directed by Travis Knight (Kubo and the Two Strings) and it hits theatres on Dec. 21st; check out the first trailer after the jump and let us know what you think.
