Warner Brothers is continuing to tweak and reevaluate their future plans for the DC Extended Universe this week, seemingly unable to settle on a solid direction. Last year they surprised everyone when it was revealed that Todd Phillips was developing a Joker prequel with Martin Scorsese producing and since then we’ve heard that Joaquin Phoenix is attached to star. At the time, it was unclear what that might mean for Jared Leto’s version of the character but they quickly responded by setting up a separate Harley Quinn / Joker spin-off. That project recently ended up getting shelved in favour of a Harley Quinn / Birds of Prey movie and now we are hearing that Jared Leto will get his own Joker solo movie instead. Hit the jump for more details.
According to Variety, Jared Leto will executive produce and star in an untitled Joker movie for Warner Brothers. Plot details are unknown but it is expected to be a movie that continues from Suicide Squad as opposed to going backward in time. The studio is planning “to expand on the world created by Suicide Squad and tie into future installments of that property.”
Right now, they currently have the Birds of Prey movie in development with Cathy Yan (Dead Pigs) attached to direct as well as a direct Suicide Squad sequel in the works with Gavin O’Connor (The Accountant) at the helm. It seems likely that both movies will arrive before this Joker movie since there is no script and no writer or director attached as of yet. Are you on board to see Jared Leto reprise his role in a solo Joker movie?
