Jake Gyllenhaal in Talks to Play Mysterio in Spider-Man: Homecoming Sequel

After The Avengers: Infinity War ended on a major cliffhanger, many fans have been wondering what it might mean for the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel, the only other Marvel movie planned for 2019 aside from Captain Marvel and the untitled Infinity War sequel. Now this week we are finally starting to get our first details about the movie, although it still does not tell us much about the repercussions of Infinity War (or does it?). From the sounds of it, Mysterio is being lined up as the primary villain of the sequel and Jake Gyllenhaal is the man they’re looking at to play the role. However, at least one other Spider-Man villain will probably be returning as well. Hit the jump for more info.
According to THR, Jake Gyllenhaal is currently in talks to play Mysterio in Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel. It is unclear what incarnation of the character they might use, but the original identity of Mysterio was Quentin Beck, a Hollywood stuntman and special effects technician who decides to use his powers of illusion for evil. Variety is also reporting that Michael Keaton will reprise his role as Vulture although the extent of his involvement is unknown.
Gyllenhaal has circled several comic book movies in the past (including Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man) but this would be his first time playing a superhero or villain. The Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel will once again be directed by Jon Watts from a script by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, The Lego Batman Movie) and it is currently scheduled to hit theatres on July 5th, 2019. Are you looking forward to seeing Mysterio on the big screen?
