The Happytime Murders Red Band Trailer: Brian Henson’s R-rated Muppet Movie

We’ve been hearing about The Happytime Murders for almost a decade now with The Henson Company announcing back in 2008 that they were developing an R-rated neo-noir Muppet movie. At the time, it seemed like one of those unique ideas that probably would never get made and yet here we are… the first trailer has arrived online and it is most definitely rated R. This is a murder mystery that takes place in a world where humans and puppets co-exist and a puppet private eye teams up with his human ex-partner to track down a serial killer. Obviously this feels a bit similar to Who Framed Roger Rabbit? in concept but the raunchy humour makes more like this year’s Sausage Party (for better or worse). Long-time Muppets performer Bill Barretta plays the private eye while Melissa McCarthy plays his partner. Maya Rudolph, Joel McHale and Elizabeth Banks also co-star. The Happytime Murders hits theatres on Aug. 17th; check out the red band trailer after the jump and see what you think.
