Monday Morning Box Office Report: The Avengers: Infinity War Smashes Opening Weekend Record

The MCU fulfilled its destiny over the weekend as The Avengers: Infinity War managed to climb past Star Wars: The Force Awakens with the biggest opening weekend of all time, a staggering $250 million (to be fair, only a few million more than The Force Awakens). It also set a new record for worldwide opening weekend with $630 million, shattering the previous record held by The Fate of the Furious ($541 million). On the one hand it makes complete sense, but on the other hand, it is still a jaw-dropping accomplishment considering that the highest opening for a Marvel movie to date was The Avengers with $207 million ($392.5 worldwide). Time will tell if this is a cultural turning point as well with the Marvel brand seemingly overtaking Star Wars in terms of popularity and relevance. Elsewhere, A Quiet Place dropped to second with $10.7 million while I Feel Pretty remained in third. Rampage fell to fourth while Black Panther jumped back into the top five as people apparently wanted a refresher before Infinity War.
