One of last year’s surprise critical favorites was the Safdie brothers’ pulpy crime film Good Time starring Robert Pattinson. The duo are now preparing their new film Uncut Gems and have found an unlikely star in Adam Sandler. While there isn’t much known about the plot yet the film is said to take place in the corrupt diamond district in New York City. That brief description alone promises another gritty crime outing for the Safdies and a departure from Sandler’s typical roles. Add to the fact that Uncut Gems will be produced by Martin Scorsese and you have an intriguing mix of talent involved.
Over the past decade Adam Sandler has starred in quite a few lazy comedies that even he doesn’t seem to have much interest in. But every now and then the former SNL star branches out and turns in a great performance. This was most recently on display in Noah Baumbach’s The Meyerowitz Stories last year. I’m interested to see what kind of role he will play here as it could potentially be his most unconventional yet. Even if the film doesn’t work out that well, I would take it over Sandler’s latest offerings from Netflix. Are you looking forward to seeing Sandler in a Safdie brothers film?
