By all accounts, Dog Eat Dog was a return to form for Paul Schrader, a bonkers crime thriller designed to push buttons in much the same way that his early work did. Now he is back with a new movie called First Reformed that seems like a follow-up of sorts to Taxi Driver and The Last Temptation of Christ (both of which he wrote for Martin Scorsese). Ethan Hawke plays an ex-military pastor who finds his himself in a crisis of faith after a young pregnant woman (Amanda Seyfried) comes to him for counseling with her radical environmentalist husband. The movie premiered at the Venice Film Festival last year where it received strong reviews and now A24 will bring it to theatres this summer. First Reformed hits select theatres on May 18th; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.
