It’s clearly something that should be addressed , even if it’s to say it’s an April fool thing or not. Even if it’s to say it’s real but he hasn’t left, just a time out and why. Either way , it’s not great that we’re as loyal fans just left in limbo. I think it should be an official announcement to let us know where it’s at!! Jay, stop dicking around and start writing that jingle of how this was one big elaborate hoax!!

  • wosko

Yep…In The Mood For Love…all the way!

  • traynor

I still have an hour left, yet I feel comfortable declaring this one of the top ten episodes in Film Junk history. So incredible it might inspire me to do something amazing with my life if there were such a thing as free will!

  • traynor

Meh, Jay is into it. He’s just in-character as a tortured artist.

  • wosko

    Reed, 2 things;
    1) There are definitely WKW fans amongst us Junkers out there…no doubt!
    2) You have way more fans out there than you realise, mate…you’re a real gem, and you bring an interesting, entertaining and unique vibe to each episode you’re on. I’m always extra pumped when I find out Mr Farrington is part of an episode.

So in other words Reed, it’s time to ditch the negativity and ignore any haters out there, and just soak up the love a lot of us have for you. You’re a dead set legend!

And that goes to you Sean, Jay & Frank! A lotta love and respect from us all for what you’ve done (so well and uniquely) for so long! You all mean a lot to us ay…we all look forward to each episode and love what your bring. Trust all is well behind the scenes, and that whatever format you fellas decide to go with will rock, as always.

    Love and respect!

  • traynor

Jay is a struggling artist, which is disheartening and stressful much of the time. If I was rich, I would give a ton of money to Jay to make whatever movie he wanted.

  • traynor

Nothing happening is what makes it so great. I’m glued to my earphones. I can’t wait to see what doesn’t happen next!

  • traynor

Hopefully he’s just leaving to focus on the Cantankerous re-launch.

  • Brian.M

Yeah I’ve been thinking that, and then having got review films too! If Jay just wants to vive along I’m cool with that.

  • Brian.M

Another Reed gem I discovered when I downloaded the ep onto my phone!

  • Brian.M

Another Reed gem (Easter Egg!) I discovered when I downloaded the ep onto my phone! I tried to upload it but somehow Disqus won’t allow me too.

  • Lori Cerny

I don’t find any men attractive and rarely do I think a female is “pretty,” but it’s because I’m asexual. To me, people just look like people – nothing special.

  • Oso Jugo

If you do the usual thing for April Fool’s day how do you fool people, dummy?

  • Peter Harrison

Hey Dumbo, the AFD tapes were a joke that became a tradition. I don’t think they were intended to actually fool anyone.

Do you really think Sean and Frank are going to say “April fools!” next episode and Jay will have returned as if this episode never happened?

  • Oso Jugo

Yeah, the AFD tapes were good but it ran out of gas because there’s only so much you can do with it I assume, so they chose to go a different route.

It doesn’t really matter to me if Jay is gone. I’m a pretty casual follower of the show. This episode was pretty entertaining either way. Keep Reed on as host. If I was Jay, I wouldn’t want to have to ever go see a superhero movie cause they are mind poison. Besides, these stooges don’t have free will so it’s not up to them what happens in the end is it?

  • Reed episodes are hands down my favorite episodes. I don’t actually think Reed will be the host going forward but I would love it if he was a permanent member of the podcast!

  • Larry Morgan
  • Reed Farrington

Yes, there she is in her scrubs.

I wonder if I love LA to Vegas because of the attractive blonde on that series.

  • Reed Farrington

If you’re referring to the image of me holding the Film Junk logo, I was originally holding the photo of Sarah Connor with her German Shepherd.

  • Reed Farrington

Nice! In the end, I guess all that matters is that we think we have free will; otherwise, it would be quite disheartening to realize that we could do nothing about being in the body of a born loser.

  • dgneb

Might I recommend “Existentialist Junk” as a revised title to go with change in format?

  • LordAwesome

Reed dropped Sean and Frank into the Wong Kar-Wai deep end and they both sank and drowned.

  • Reed Farrington

Thanks for posting your kind words, wosko! My problem is that I think peeps hate me because I’m arrogant, but then when I try to be humble, peeps think I’m fishing for compliments. I’m just a naturally arrogant peeps pleaser.

I guess the Film Junk audience is so diverse now that we could talk about any film or filmmaker and someone would be a fan.

  • newtaurus

Listening to the episode now. I hope this is just the annual April Fool’s prank show and not the new status quo.

However, I thought it was pretty obvious that these “format changes” being tossed around were more to appease Jay rather than attempt to make a better show. If he doesn’t want to be on the show anymore then he should not be on the show anymore, I don’t see why Sean and Frank have to screw up a good thing because one guy doesn’t want to play along anymore.

  • People think you’re arrogant?! I honestly don’t get that at all. You’re extremely opinionated though but that is what makes you so much fun to listen to even if I rarely actually agree with them ;)

  • Bandit Manatee

Jay has this personality where he is completely set doing things the “cool” way until suddenly and arbitrarily thinks it is not “cool” anymore and suddenly does the complete opposite and has complete disdain for people that still follow the old “cool” rule.

For example the change from 4 to 5 star ratings, using letterboxd or not using letterboxd. Not talking about Tv (except for the “cool” shows jay likes) now apparently he is not rating film because this is the new “cool” thing if he stays on the show he will surely abolish star ratings

  • Tomoo

Jay has wanted to get rid of star ratings for as long as I can remember (and I have been listening for quite a while).

  • Glendon

This was The Last Jedi of FJ episodes. Can’t tell if this transformation to Content Junk is real or Jay’s ultimate April Fool’s Prank.

  • frankw35

Reed, your tweet made me actually believe in the spirit of April Fools (I do miss the annual kids episode) that Jay was actually going to imitate you for the whole episode, and for the first minute I thought “He’s fantastic–this sounds just like him”–but then the laugh and stammer gave you away. Anyway not sure what kind of Junk this was but still enjoyable. Maybe a reboot of Cantankerous is in order. And was trying to nail down your ring tone–at first thought it was theme music from “Suspiria” but not quite a match. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pins1y0XAa0

  • newtaurus

Yeah, I see your point. But I’d rather have the show with him than without him. I guess one of the issues is going to the theater every week but that’s an easy fix if Jay wanted to be reasonable about it.

But if Jay really wanted to make a shorter show he should try spending less time trying to prove to everyone he’s the smartest person in the room. That would save 20-30 minutes.

  • Craig

This was the only episode of FJ that I thought was a chore to listen to. Not even so much that Jay wasn’t there, but that while I can take Reed when he’s the fourth member, having him host was too much for me.

  • Carl Hobday

Listened to the whole episode now. It’s fine as a one off but me personally, I like an intro , a movie review, abit of news (if any worthy enough), what we’ve watched, listeners questions, then DVD/blu ray releases. That’s what we all loved right?? It also needs to be all 3 together with drop ins from all the regulars. Not wanting to always review the big theatre releases is fine but on those weeks you could pick a new VOD release that has some buzz or an older movie of note. Why not keep everything else the same?? It works and we all love it. Sure it’s good to hear something different every now and then but week in week out that’s what everyone has loved so far. In the latest episode it was only Frank that wanted the blu ray releases mentioned, reviewing games, audio books, Reeds obscure reads, politics and a movie that 2 pretty much hated and 1 had only seen 10mins of it with subtitles on. I personally would have found this episode more agreeable if Jay had been on it as he would have challenged and spiced it up. My opinion is that you work best as a threesome plus special guests and you should keep the format the same as always but change the main review to wherever the most interesting option comes from. Hopefully Jay just had a week out to post all our How To Build A Time Machine blu rays

He’s dead right about ratings, which feel so arbitrary at times. This is especially true of older films which should never be given a ‘rating’ becuase we are watching them completely out of context. I don’t see the problem with Jay changing his mind on things. As I’ve got older I’m less interested in certain things that held my attention years before. I’ll respect anyone who can back up their opinion with some sense of logic, which he tends to do most of the time.

  • BoobieNiklas

Are you guys all crazy? At the very end you can hear Jay say “Cool”. He was there the whole time

  • stevens1

Nah that was Sean. But Jay will be back.

  • milan

Love the new “content junk”! Sean and Frank unleashed are great…

  • Carl Hobday

*everyone now re listening to the last 30 seconds*

  • Danimal

Hooray, it’s a new Cantankerous episode!

I’ve refrained from getting involved with all the format suggestions until now but I just wanted to say do what you guys want. I’ve been consistently entertained over the last 8 years. Long or short, tangents or focussed, new or old, it really doesn’t matter unless you’re noting significant dips in listenership when you do certain styles (and if you care about it).

Outside of that, just do what you want. I wouldn’t want it any other way.

  • Reed Farrington

I was all set to ask a bunch of personal questions relating to their interest in film. I was even going to ask them the quintessential interview question, “Is there anything you’ve wanted to talk about on Film Junk, but never had the chance to?” And I completely forgot!

  • Reed Farrington

But was it live, or was it Memorex? (Jay was feeding me the questions.)

  • Reed Farrington

I like to keep my listeners mentally challenged.

  • Reed Farrington

My ringtone is one of the free generic ringtones pre-installed on the phone. It just so happens to be one of my fav classical pieces most likely because it’s commonly played. Embarrassingly, I can’t remember the composer or the title.

  • Reed Farrington

“One never realizes how good something is until it’s replaced by something terrible.” – Reedoucheus.

  • milan

Next week! You guys can go even further, something like “film junk: after dark” or “XXX JUNK” with more adult oriented themes as well…

  • Reed Farrington

Wow. If you’re asexual, Lori, maybe you’re not human. You should at least be some psychologist’s case-study.

  • B MP Rooney

Listened to the full episode. Scattered thoughts:

    1. Film Junk is the greatest thing all time (movie, book, podcast, all forms of content).
    2. Posting this particular episode on April Fool’s Day with a new Spielberg nostalgia trip in theaters, is hands down the funniest, saddest, confounding experience of all time.
    3. Jay’s departure is an extreme bummer. If that’s the case! If he is on next week’s episode, there will be a great sigh of relief. If he is not on next week’s episode, I will continue to listen and each week hope he does.
    4. What an incredible episode. SNL sucks.

  • Larry Morgan

I really liked Jay’s ideas which is why when at the end of last weeks episode I found it odd the plan was for everyone to have to review Ready Player One. TBH I don’t care if you all watch the movie, and I bet most Junkers agree. I really don’t need everyones opinions on the same movie. If it’s 2/3 or even 1/3, whatever! The worst thing is to hear anyone talk about something they didn’t care about.

Anyways, I’ll listen either way and I loved having 3 hours to “hang” with Reed, Sean, and Frank, an they did seem a little more alive. Free range discussions are fine by me, I just don’t see why anything has to be so rigid that it would force Jay to be uninterested in the show. If he doesn’t feel like reviewing the big garbage then he shouldn’t have to. If he just wants to chime in to make fun of frank and talk about random criterion movies then I am all for it.

  • Peter Harrison

    Embrace the love Reed!

  • MartyMcFlyJr

I agree, but do find it odd that guys don’t want to talk about the latest Speilberg movie.

  • Nic

    It’s by Erik Satie
