Superfly Teaser Trailer

So apparently a remake of the 1972 blaxploitation classic Super Fly is nearing completion and this week we’ve got the first trailer to prove it. The new version is directed by a guy named Director X. (a “visionary” filmmaker known for his music video work) and written by Alex Tse (Watchmen), who are giving the story a very modern makeover rather than playing for nostalgia. At its core, it still revolves around a drug dealer named Youngblood Priest (played by Trevor Jackson) who is trying to get out of the game. Jason Mitchell, Jennifer Morrison, Andrea Londo, Lex Scott Davis and Terayle Hill co-star while rapper / producer Future provides the soundtrack. Superfly hits theatres on June 15th; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.

Director X, a “visionary” filmmaker known for his music video work? Really…well I was not impressed with this teaser. Looks terrible like it was shot with a video cameras all set to wide focus. Looks very amateur, and very very contrived. Pass.

Barf. They could have at least nodded to the Curtis Mayfield track.
Digital cinematography sure hasn’t looked like this since Michael Mann put out a movie, but while I can appreciate Miami Vice not trying to emulate film, I dunno if it’s so intentional here.
