Despite rampant speculation that the Indiana Jones franchise might be headed for a reboot, back in 2016 Disney and Lucasfilm officially announced that there would still be a fifth installment starring Harrison Ford with Steven Spielberg at the helm. At the time, they set a release date of July 19th, 2019, but with Spielberg contemplating several other projects including a West Side Story remake that date eventually shifted to 2020. Now it sounds like the wheels are finally in motion and a production start is scheduled for next year. Spielberg revealed the news at the Empire Awards in London last night:
“It’s always worth the trip when I get to work with this deep bench of talent coming out of the UK. The actors, and the crew, the chippies, the sparks, the drivers — everybody who has helped me make my movies here, and will continue helping me make my movies here when I come back in April 2019 to make the fifth Indiana Jones movie right here.”
Not much is yet known about Indiana Jones 5 except that David Koepp is writing the script and Shia LaBeouf’s character Mutt will not be making an appearance. Disney CEO Bob Iger also promised that this would not be the last Indy movie, although whether Harrison Ford would be up for another one remains to be seen. The movie is currently expected to hit theatres on July 20th, 2020. Are you psyched for Indiana Jones 5?
