Monday Morning Box Office Report: Black Panther Bests A Wrinkle in Time

Black Panther continued its unprecedented theatrical run this past weekend as the movie earned another $41.1 million to stay at the top of the box office for the fourth weekend in a row. No other Marvel movie has accomplished that to date and the only other movies in the past decade to have pulled it off are Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Avatar and The Dark Knight. The movie also opened in China with $66.5 million, pushing it past the $1 billion mark worldwide. In second place, Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time earned a slightly disappointing $33 million, falling directly in line with comparisons to Brad Bird’s Tomorrowland (although the latter cost almost twice as much to make). The Strangers: Prey at Night debuted in third with $10.2 million, while Red Sparrow and Game Night rounded out the top 5. Elsewhere, The Hurricane Heist flopped in eighth place with just $3.2 million while Gringo opened outside the top 10 with just $2.6 million. Both movies had pretty terrible per theatre averages, which is probably not all that surprising.
