The future of the so-called DC Extended Universe may be looking as uncertain as ever following Justice League, but Warner Brothers is continuing to turn heads with some of the talent they are landing for their other standalone comic book projects. Last summer they announced an inexplicable yet potentially exciting solo movie that would focus on the origins of The Joker with Martin Scorsese attached to produce and Todd Phillips attached to co-write and direct. The project supposedly blindsided Jared Leto who was still expected to reprise his role as The Joker from Suicide Squad and it left fans divided over whether it was even a good idea. But now things are getting more surreal because they’ve reportedly managed to convince a respected A-list actor to star. Could this be the miracle that the DC Universe sorely needs?
According to Variety, Joaquin Phoenix has agreed to star in an untitled Joker movie from Todd Phillips and Martin Scorsese. Negotiations are not yet underway, but Phoenix is reportedly the top choice for the role and after mulling it over he has decided to move forward. Frequent Scorsese collaborator Leonardo DiCaprio was previously rumoured for the part but it is unclear if he ever gave it any serious consideration.
Landing a big name was essential to getting this project a studio greenlight and it now appears that they have it. Phoenix is an inspired choice but also a bit of a surprise given how reluctant he has been to get involved with big budget studio films. He was close to signing on to play Doctor Strange for Marvel a few years back but he ultimately walked away. Do you think Joaquin Phoenix will make a great Joker?
