Game of Thrones Showrunners Developing Another New Star Wars Trilogy

With one episode left before the newest Star Wars trilogy is complete, Disney and Lucasfilm are now working hard to plan “Phase 2″ of the franchise once the Skywalker Saga has run its course. Obviously we know they will keep developing one-shot spin-offs like Rogue One and Solo, but part of the draw of Star Wars has always been a continuing space opera where you can’t wait to see what happens next. It was previously announced that Rian Johnson is working on another Star Wars trilogy focusing on new characters and now it appears that there is another brand new series of films in the works courtesy of Game of Thrones series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, had this to say about the announcement:
“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today… Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”
Although details are still slim, Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger mentioned on an earnings call that they are interested in “a particular point in time in the Star Wars franchise.” Although you might assume the duo would be an ideal choice to oversee a Star Wars TV series, they were apparently keen to get away from television. Disney did confirm that there are a couple of Star Wars shows in development for their upcoming streaming service, however, and separate announcements are expected for those soon. In the meantime, Benioff and Weiss are expected to start work on their movies (which they will write and produce) once Game of Thrones concludes in 2019. Do you think they will be a great addition to the Star Wars universe?
