Game of Thrones Showrunners Developing Another New Star Wars Trilogy

With one episode left before the newest Star Wars trilogy is complete, Disney and Lucasfilm are now working hard to plan “Phase 2″ of the franchise once the Skywalker Saga has run its course. Obviously we know they will keep developing one-shot spin-offs like Rogue One and Solo, but part of the draw of Star Wars has always been a continuing space opera where you can’t wait to see what happens next. It was previously announced that Rian Johnson is working on another Star Wars trilogy focusing on new characters and now it appears that there is another brand new series of films in the works courtesy of Game of Thrones series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, had this to say about the announcement:

“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today… Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”

Although details are still slim, Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger mentioned on an earnings call that they are interested in “a particular point in time in the Star Wars franchise.” Although you might assume the duo would be an ideal choice to oversee a Star Wars TV series, they were apparently keen to get away from television. Disney did confirm that there are a couple of Star Wars shows in development for their upcoming streaming service, however, and separate announcements are expected for those soon. In the meantime, Benioff and Weiss are expected to start work on their movies (which they will write and produce) once Game of Thrones concludes in 2019. Do you think they will be a great addition to the Star Wars universe?

Wow. So there really is going to be at least one Star Wars movie per year for the foreseeable future. When is LucasFilm going to confirm Ewan McGregor is going to be in the Obi-Wan spin off? That’s the news I’m waiting for…

Wow I’m a big SW fan but can this just be a little to much? I know Disney is gonna milk the Universe as much as they can but man talk about overkill.

I mean quantity is nice but when quality suffers ( yeah I’m looking at you “the Last Jedi” ) that kinda sucks in the long run. For me so far the Luke Skywalker saga really isn’t interesting anymore after GL (prequels) and JJ ruined it. And while the spinoff with “Rogue One” was pretty good, the movie universe overall is really lackluster…like the scene where Leia uses the force to save herself from deep space…lackluster and silly.

I was looking forward to David Benioff and D.B. Weiss proposed HBO alternative history drama where slavery was legal in modern day America.

I have no interest in another Star Wars trilogy.

If they had signed up to do super hero movies I would have had a stroke.

  • There was like a month there where there were only two or three Star Wars movies on the horizon and everyone was panicking, so this is just the best news.

  • Deven Science

I hadn’t heard about that alternate history series. In a similar vein to Man in the High Castle, I suppose. That sounds like it could have been cool.

  • RockJoker

Yeah, i think ive heard something along those lines. Huh. Still interested in what they can bring to SW.

The CoPo kinda shut that show down immediately after it was announced but yeah, it sounds like this is the final nail in the coffin for it.

I’m with Glen. The rate of Star Wars films and announcements is starting to seriously bum me out. I don’t recognize it anymore, and now that it’s a vehicle for social proselytizing I just can’t…just…can’t.

It was going to be called Confederate.

if both johnson as well as weiss & benioff are working on trilogies and we’ll also get all the spin-offs, it definitely sounds like more than one movie per year to me. oh my.
