It’s been almost a decade since Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie opted not to produce a third season of their HBO series Flight of the Conchords, but they have continued to keep themselves busy. Clement co-wrote and directed What We Do in the Shadows with Taika Waititi and starred in movies like Men in Black 3, while McKenzie wrote music for the two most recent Muppet movies and appeared in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey as well. They have also continued to perform together on occasion while rumours have persisted about a possible Flight of the Conchords movie. During a recent press appearance, Clement hinted that something might finally be happening on that front and now this week HBO has officially confirmed that a new Flight of the Conchords special is coming later this year. It’s not a movie, but it might be the next best thing. Hit the jump for more info.
According to the press release, Casey Bloys, president of HBO Programming officially announced this week that a new Flight of the Conchords special is in the works and expected to premiere in May. It will be filmed during upcoming dates on their “Flight of the Conchords Sing Flight of the Conchords Tour” and will feature them performing songs both new and old. The hour-long special will be directed by Hamish Hamilton, who has previously directed concert films for U2, Jay-Z, Madonna and Rammstein (among others).
Obviously it does not sound like the format will be similar at all to the HBO series; instead this is a much more standard concert film / standup comedy special. That being said, there is still bound to be a little more going on than just standing on stage and playing music. Are you looking forward to a new Flight of the Conchords special?
