After coming together for the solid yet unremarkable rust belt thriller Out of the Furnace in 2013, director Scott Cooper and Christian Bale are once again reteaming for a new film that already seems to be generating some decent buzz coming out of the Telluride Film Festival. Hostiles is a 19th-century western that finds Bale playing an US Cavalry captain who escorts a Cheyenne chief and his family back to their tribal home when he comes across a woman whose family was killed in a raid (Rosamund Pike). Bale’s character is racist and deeply conflicted, which has helped draw comparisons to John Ford’s The Searchers. Hostiles also co-stars Wes Studi, Adam Beach, Ben Foster, Jesse Plemons and Rory Cochrane and it will be looking to land U.S. distribution when it plays at TIFF later this month.
