Loving Vincent Trailer: The First Fully Oil Painted Feature Film

Sometimes it takes a unique gimmick to get an independent film noticed, and when it comes to gimmicks, Loving Vincent has a pretty cool one. The movie tells the life story of Vincent Van Gogh presented entirely in the visual style of his paintings. Directed by Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman and made over a six year period, the movie uses a technique similar to rotoscoping where 125 artists hand-painted each frame. With a live-action cast that includes Chris O’Dowd, Saoirse Ronan, Aidan Turner, Eleanor Tomlinson, Jerome Flynn and Robert Gulaczyk, this looks like a pretty unique and ambitious cinematic experience if nothing else. Loving Vincent hits select theatres on Sept. 22nd; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.

I saw a teaser trailer for this about 3 years ago, give or take. It looks to be something that has not been seen before. Beautiful. Can’t wait to watch it.

That looks a little too gimicky for my tastes. I would watch if it was a short, but full feature length? That could get exhausting.
