Over the past few years we’ve seen Mondo build on the success of their highly sought after posters to designing many other kinds of unique pop culture collectibles including vinyl soundtracks, toys and pins. Now they are apparently moving on to the next logical realm: board games? This week Mondo has announced that they are teaming up with USAopoly to create a board game based on John Carpenter’s 1982 horror classic The Thing. The game is called The Thing: Infection at Outpost 31 and the gameplay description is as follows:
“In The Thing: Infection at Outpost 31, relive John Carpenter’s sci-fi cult classic as a hidden identity game designed to push you to the edge. Play as one of a dozen characters like helicopter pilot MacReady, mechanic Childs, or station manager Garry. Face sabotage and infection as you investigate the facility-gather gear, battle The Thing, expose any imitations among you, and escape Outpost 31!
Tension mounts and paranoia ensues as you question who you can trust in the ultimate race to save humanity.”
The game is a collaboration with USAopoly’s designer games division, Project Raygun, and it features artwork and designs by Justin Erickson of Phantom City Creative. There will be a standard retail version available in stores but as you would expect there will also be an exclusive Mondo version limited to 1,982 copies. The limited edition version features alternate packaging artwork by Jock anhd will also include a Mondo print, enamel pin and two additional sculpted movers: the Norwegian character and the Palmer Thing. It remains to be seen if this will be something people actually play or it is just something to look nice on your shelf. The Thing: Infection at Outpost 31 hits stores this October… will you be picking it up?
