We all know that documentaries evolve throughout the course of their production, sometimes becoming something very different than originally intended (assuming the filmmaker is open to that, of course). In the case of Laura Poitras’ WikiLeaks documentary Risk, the film has seemingly continued to evolve even after its premiere at Cannes last year. At the time, Poitras was accused of being maybe a little too cozy with Julian Assange, but the doc has since been acquired by Neon and will now seemingly cast a more critical eye toward his various contradictions. Executive produced by Sam Esmail (Mr. Robot), this looks like another real-life paranoid thriller in the vein of her Edward Snowden doc Citizenfour, but it will be interesting to see what kind of stance the final product takes. Risk hits theatres sometime this summer before premiering on Showtime; check out the first trailer after the jump and see what you think.
