William Peter Blatty 1928-2017

It would appear that 2017 has just claimed one of its first major celebrity deaths from the world of cinema. According to William Friedkin (via Twitter), writer / director William Peter Blatty, the man who wrote The Exorcist passed away yesterday. Details surrounding his death were not immediately available, but he had just celebrated his 89th birthday a few days ago. The Exorcist wasn’t the only work he was known for. Blatty also directed a couple of well-regarded films himself in addition to contributing to the screenplays for several other significant films throughout the course of his career. Hit the jump for details.

William Peter Blatty got his start as a writer in 1959 with the book Which Way to Mecca, Jack? and eventually broke into Hollywood as a comedic screenwriter. He co-wrote a handful of Blake Edwards films throughout the ’60s, most notably A Shot in the Dark, the second Pink Panther film (and also widely considered to be the best). He did an uncredited rewrite on The Omega Man starring Charlton Heston before becoming a household name with The Exorcist. Blatty went on to write and direct The Ninth Configuration as well as The Exorcist III, the latter of which is known for one of the best horror jump scares of all time. What are your favourite William Peter Blatty works?

    That made me smile.

  • I recently listened to Blatty narrating his audiobook ‘the Exorcist’ and it was one of my favourite audiobook readings. His portrayal of Lieutenant Kinderman outclasses the films casting and becomes the standout character, along with a lot of great added context and departures from the main storyline commonly missing from film adaptations, I’d definitely recommend this audiobook for film fans who’d like to dig a little deeper into the story. I’m interested to explore more of his work but I think the Exorcist seems to be his best work by a long way?

Very cool – thanks for posting this. I think I’ll go and have an 11 hour bath and listen to the whole thing.

I’m a total Exorcist fanboy and had the pleasure of corresponding with WPB several years ago, and after a few back and forths he arranged to sign some first editions of his work. What I found surprising was he really believed the basis of the novel and the spiritual questions it raised. “Legion” is the true sequel and basis for “Exorcist III” The only two films that Blatty had something to do with are the only franchise movies worth watching as far as I’m concerned (although he was wrong and Friedkin was right about the original cut vs his vision).
