Monday Morning Box Office Report: Rogue One Cleans Up with Third Highest Opening of 2016

Well it definitely didn’t come close to generating The Force Awakens-type numbers, but Rogue One: A Star Wars Story still easily managed to snag the second highest December debut ever with $155 million. That’s also the third highest start for any movie in 2016 behind Captain America: Civil War and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. With a somewhat lacklustre line-up of big releases coming over the next few weekends, it should continue to bring in audiences well into 2017. In second place, Disney’s Moana added another $11.7 million while Office Christmas Party dropped to third with $8.5 million. Meanwhile Collateral Beauty had a pretty disastrous debut, opening in fourth place with just $7 million, the lowest ever for a major Will Smith movie. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them rounded out the top 5 and Manchester by the Sea jumped into sixth place after opening wide. It should be interesting to see how the next couple of weeks play out.
