2016 Film Junk Readers’ Choice Awards: Voting is Now Open!

It’s hard to believe that the end of the year is just a few weeks away, but apparently it’s time to start looking back on 2016 in an attempt to put it all into perspective. We’re currently in the process of building our individual lists for best movies of the year, but we like to get the Film Junk readers and listeners involved as well. Just as we do every year, we have come up with a list of nominees broken up across several different (and all but completely arbitrary) genres and now we are turning it over to you to decide the winners. You also get a couple of write-in votes for best movie of the year and biggest disappointment (in order to be eligible, movies should have been released theatrically in the U.S. in 2016). We’ll reveal the winners shortly after Jan. 1st, at which point our own lists will hopefully be ready as well. So what are you waiting for?     Not in my book. La La Land looks very promising. Haven’t yet had the chance to see it.

    I do not believe they have given any 6/5s yet. For me personally, I gave 6/5 to Sing Street and Hunt for the Wilderpeople. Great films in a pathetic year for film. Thankfully there is always the opportunity for most people to discover the cinema of the past. I recently discovered Death Race 2000. I’d give that film 2000/5.

    I actually think this has been a pretty great year for film. Green Room, Hell or High Water, Manchester by the Sea, Moonlight, The Handmaiden, Nocturnal Animals, and Everybody Wants Some are just a few that come to mind. Still a bunch I need to see.

    Not that I do the 6/5 thing, but I’d say that Manchester by the Sea and La La Land were quite amazing.

    Yeah, I never understood the bashing of this year’s movies. In pretty much any year, you could make a pretty solid list of best movies, if you watch enough or seek some out.

    Maybe from a blockbuster stand point this year has been bad, but I’d have a pretty tough time with a top 10 at this point because of too many solid films, and I still need to see stuff like Toni Erdmann, Paterson, Silence, La La Land, Rogue One, The Lure, Girl With All the Gifts, American Honey, etc…

    Movies like Manchester By the Sea, Arrival, Moonlight, Everybody Wants Some, Elle, The Handmaiden, Nocturnal Animals, The Nice Guys, Hell or High Water, Green Room, The Lobster, Sing Street, The Witch, Edge of Seventeen, Jackie, etc… wouldn’t feel out of place in my Top 10 this year, even with the movies I still have yet to see.

    This summer was exceptionally bad for blockbusters, but the films released in the spring and fall have more than made up for that. The ones you listed all highlight that.

    My vote would’ve gone towards X-Men for best comic book movie.
