Justin Lin to Reboot Knight Rider

Last month it was announced that Fast & Furious director Justin Lin had signed on to direct a feature film based on the Hot Wheels toy line. Now this week he has reportedly been hired to reboot yet another car-based property: the ’80s TV series Knight Rider. This new version won’t be a feature film, however, nor will it be a network TV series. Instead, the new Knight Rider will be a digital series produced for the web in partnership with Machinima and NBCUniversal. Justin Lin will direct and produce through his production company, YOMYOMF (You Offend Me You Offend My Family). Machinima CEO Chad Gutstein had this to say about the project:

“Knight Rider is an iconic franchise whose concepts of AI and autonomous vehicles were science fiction in the 1980s and are now science fact… Justin is one of the leading storytellers of his generation and we couldn’t be more excited to work with him on re-invigorating Knight Rider for a new generation of fans.”

The original Knight Rider aired from 1982 to 1986 and starred David Hasselhoff as Michael Knight, a secret agent fighting crime with the help of his artificially intelligent car KITT. Since then, it has been rebooted a few times for the small screen without much success. This is a different (and probably smarter) approach, considering that Machinima has produced some high profile web series over the past few years including Mortal Kombat: Legacy and Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn. Still, something tells me people would be a lot more excited if this was a big screen adaptation instead. Will you watch a Knight Rider web series directed by Justin Lin?

    Dear Hollywood,

    Yes, it’s obvious that the eighties were the best years of film and tv. Ok, maybe not TV, a lot of that stuff has not aged well. The movies, however, were the best and the nineties surely benefited from the eighties awesomeness. Then the 21st century hit and it’s been a downward spiral ever since. You’ve been desperately trying to rebirth that awesome eighties cinema but your not doing it right. How many times can you fail before you realize a remake of something great then is going to be shit now. You want to know why the eighties are so damned awesome? Because the movies were new and original. Now get to it, make something new because I’m running out of movies made in the eighties and nineties that I haven’t seen and what the hell am I going to watch then?
