Duncan Jones’ Mute Heads to Netflix

As Netflix’s catalogue of streaming titles continues to dwindle (their library has reportedly shrunk by 50% over the past four years), the money they are saving there is being invested in original content instead. Although the quality of that original content is up for debate, it’s always nice to hear when they are able to swoop in and save a movie that is unable to find a home anywhere else. Case in point: Mute, a sci-fi project that Duncan Jones has been developing for years now and a spiritual successor to his directorial debut Moon. The movie is currently in production in Berlin and now it has just been revealed that Netflix will release it sometime next year. Hit the jump for more details.
In a recent appearance on the Empire Podcast, Alexander Skarsgard revealed that Netflix will be releasing Duncan Jones’ Mute on their streaming service with a day-and-date theatrical release as well. Earlier this year, Jones told Den of Geek that they had found the right home for it, and while no official announcement has been made, this all seems to make sense. Jones had also been planning to adapt Mute as a graphic novel with Dark Horse but that appears to be on hold for the time being.
The movie takes place in Berlin 40 years in the future and revolves around a mute bartender (Skarsgard) whose girlfriend goes missing. It has been described as a “murder mystery set in the world of cybernetic surgeons” and based on some of the concept art that’s floating around out there, it’s pretty clear that Blade Runner is a major influence. Paul Rudd, Justin Theroux and Gilbert Owuor will also co-star along with Sam Rockwell, who will apparently reprise his role from Moon. Are you looking forward to Duncan Jones’ Mute?
