    The review for Wilderpeople sounded like you guys were reviewing Harry Potter again, which is totally fine. Jay’s 3 star review set the tone and it just went downhill. Then at the end, we find out that Frank & Sean give it 4.5 and 4 stars!!! I was expecting 3.5 from both. Debbie-downer Jay killed the vibecast.

    Yeah, I did like the movie a fair amount, just not as much as I expected to. I was struggling to come up with more positive stuff to say. Sometimes you don’t realize until you’re in the middle of a review that the star rating in your head doesn’t match what you have to say about it.

    Incidentally, I think I mentioned sarcastically that Sully could have used a Clint Eastwood original song. Didn’t realize he did write the main theme. The guy does it all!

    @Sean – Looks like you listed the wrong Jonbenet show in the show notes (should be The Case of: JonBenét Ramsey), but there have been three in the past month or so.
    Also disappointed in American Crime Story using Hurricane Catrina as the basis of it’s next season but thought the same when I heard O.J was season one so hopefully it might turn out good but I think the Spike Lee Documentary and Treme have said all that needs to be said on the matter. Would have loved a trashy Nancy Kerrigan/Tonya Harding retelling.
    Finally, I know you said you hated video essays but I think these are excellent if you or Frank have not seen them (Three parts so far) enjoy.

    Not your fault Sean. I always expect you to be even-steven. The jedi master of the group. The KOC should’ve shown a little more life for a 4.5 star comedy, though he still made good points. At least you can say, you weren’t the vibe-killer for once.

    Did you all see it on VOD? I feel like this film might’ve benefitted from a theatrical screening. Can’t speak for Toronto cinemas, but the almost sold-out screening I saw was filled with at least a one-third (no exaggeration) New Zealand/Australian audience. The humour perfectly played to the crowd. Maybe Frank wouldn’t have liked that ;) ?

    Technically Rob Zombie is supposed to be for September and Texas Chainsaw / Tobe Hooper for October, but we’re running behind schedule. I think we’re going to try to do both this month but it’s possible one will get pushed.

    I liked Hunt For the Wilder People, but I’d agree that I laughed more at Neighbors 2, and Nice Guys.

    What you guys missed with Hunt…. It’s a movie for kids… of all ages.

    Visually, there are certainly similarities to Wes Anderson, but the writing style is completely different. Ricky Baker talks and acts like a kid. You don’t get anything like that in a Wes Anderson film.

    Not only did you miss that this movie is for kids, but that it’s not a comedy. It’s an adventure coming of age drama with a few laughs thrown in. I smile thinking about this movie, I can barely remember what the Nice Guys was even about, nor what was funny about it.

    I could go scene by scene of why this movie is a fucking masterpiece, but I’m too lazy so you can work it out for yourself. Or not.

    I would like to say sorry for building up the hype on this one. Maybe it’s a cultural thing only New Zealanders and Aussies get.

    I really liked the evolution of Ricky’s bedroom. How at first it was cluttered with knick knacks you’d expect a visiting grandma to warm to, hot water bottle included. Then we see the room become less cluttered and more appropriate for a kid in it’s next shot. Then heartbreak as the final reveal shows no hot water bottle. No dialogue just three simple images. Beautiful.

    Yeah, but they didn’t actually end up flying the plane in this case. Crew members reported it. I guess that’s the thing, it seems like so many people would have to go along with it. And maybe I don’t know what I’m talking about, but I seem to remember real pilots objecting to this element of the movie when it originally hit theatres.

    Don’t worry, you weren’t the only one building hype on it. It’s sitting at like 98% on Rotten Tomatoes.

    I definitely realize it’s aiming to be more than just a comedy, but when the emotional stuff didn’t totally work for me, that’s a problem. I think the first 10 or 15 minutes did work, as I mentioned. But after that, things got a bit more cartoony I guess.

    Yeah I saw that on his IMDb. It’s definitely another show I’d like to get to eventually. The six-episode seasons mean it may actually happen at some point in my lifetime.

    Just saw the new Tim Burton movie and there’s some honest to goodness stop motion in it.
    It should be an interesting review. The above might bump Jay up. The Young Adult trappings might break Frank’s Bim Turton spell… Looking forward to it :)

  • Here ya go Sean (http://www.cbsnews.com/news/drunk-piloting-how-common-is-it-really/) 100 pilots a year go through rehab for alcoholism. It used to be a serious problem in the 70’s and 80’s, and cocaine has long been associated with piloting. Most of the US Air Force pilots are on some sort of speed to help them with their ridiculously long flights.

    Captain America March by Alan Silvestri is memorable and very melodic.

    Kind of related… The Every Frame A Painting channel has an episode on Satoshi Kon. I know there have been attempts to sway Jay into anime, but although I’m certain he’d dislike 99% of it, i could see jay enjoying the work of Satoshi Kon.

  • Well I’m with you guys on WILDERPEOPLE. It’s fine and I enjoyed it, but ultimately it lacks much humor, emotion or even that great of a story. Mostly the joy in this movie is picking out the influences. Everyone says Wes Anderson, but I saw a lot of Edgar Wright in there too (which I think Jay mentioned).

  • Also totally with Sean on The Fury. It’s a terrible movie. It was the one film I actively disliked after watching almost his entire filmography over the summer.

    Blow Out is a masterpiece though. You should really check out Sisters or Hi Mom.

    I heard from a friend that there was a lost episode of the movie review show where Jay somehow convinced Frank and Sean to watch films with unsimulated sex scenes at Reed’s house (willing to bet Frank called his mom to come pick him up halfway through…). Maybe a future premium pod release?

    Given all of the guys’ love for Inception, a discussion about “Paprika” and how it compares to Nolan’s movie would be great to hear.

    Jay’s handling of the thief is impressive. How would Sean and Frank have handled the situation? My first thought would be, “Is this asshole carrying a gun or some other weapon?” and I’d be too cautious to act as smoothly as Jay.

    I agree. I enjoyed it (3.5/5 on Letterboxd) but felt it was a pretty big step down from What We Do in the Shadows. Just didn’t find it as funny as most did but it’s definitely not bad. I kinda felt that the guys wouldn’t enjoy it as much as others either, which is why I was more interested in hearing them discuss Hell or High Water instead which I’m less unsure where they’d fall.

  • Oh for sure. HELL OR HIGH WATER is one of the best films of the year I’ve seen so far. I think these guys would like it a lot more – particularly Sean I think for some reason.

    I always thought that Stripped by Depeche Mode was an influence on A Warm Place. Definitely a similar pattern…not exact but similar enough. Just skip to about 2:20 seconds into the song.
