Friday the 13th Reboot Gets a New Director

When New Line and Platinum Dunes rebooted Friday the 13th back in 2009, it seemed like they had successfully revived an old slasher franchise that had been previously run into the ground. Since then, however, the franchise changed hands to Paramount and no one has been able to agree on where it should go next. A few years ago, director David Bruckner (V/H/S, The Signal) was brought on board to explore the possibility of a found footage Friday the 13th, but eventually that premise was dropped in favour of a more traditional slasher film set in the ’80s. Then last December, Bruckner officially left the project and Prisoners screenwriter Aaron Guzikowski was hired to start over again from scratch. Now another director is getting a chance to potentially reinvent Jason Voorhees. Hit the jump for the full scoop.
According to Deadline, Breck Eisner is in talks to direct the next Friday the 13th film for Paramount and Platinum Dunes. Eisner has directed a few genre flicks previously including a remake of George A. Romero’s The Crazies and The Last Witch Hunter starring Vin Diesel. He has also been attached to direct a ton of films that still have yet to see the light of day including remakes of Escape from New York and The Brood plus The Karate Kid 2.
I seem to recall The Crazies earning fairly positive reviews at the time, but I’m still not too sure how horror fans feel about Eisner as a director. I suppose it really depends on what kind of approach he might take. It seems unlikely that this will still be set in the ’80s and I think the possibility of making it a direct follow-up to the original 1980 film has also been dropped. At any rate, this is the 13th installment in the series, which should be an easy win for the marketing department. Does this news make you more or less excited about the next Friday the 13th movie?
