Monday Morning Box Office Report: Suicide Squad Sticks it to the Critics

It was Batman v Superman all over again this past weekend as Suicide Squad opened to a massive $135 million despite largely negative reviews and a general feeling of disappointment. That smashes the previous August record of $94.3 million held by Guardians of the Galaxy and it is also slightly more than Deadpool made earlier this year, although it is understandably short of BvS‘s $166 million debut. Unlike BvS, the marketing for the film was clearly a success, although it may have raised expectations a little too high. Elsewhere, Jason Bourne took a pretty steep fall in its second week, dropping 62% to take $22.7 million. Bad Moms and The Secret Life of Pets remained in third and fourth place respectively while Star Trek Beyond fell all the way to fifth. The other new movie in wide release, Nine Lives, opened in sixth with a paltry $6.5 million. Will Suicide Squad be able to maintain this momentum next week or will it drop off like most of the other major releases this summer?
