Park Chan-wook’s The Handmaiden Trailer

thehandmaiden

The man who brought us such twisted thrillers as Oldboy, Thirst and Stoker is back with another unsettling tale of deception and vengeance. Park Chan-wook’s latest film The Handmaiden finds him travelling back to 1930s Korea where a young woman poses as a handmaiden in order to help convince a Japanese heiress to marry a con man after her fortune. Unfortunately, things get a bit more complicated when the handmaiden and the heiress end up falling for each other instead. The off-kilter trailer promises some stunning imagery along with a general sense of unease and early reviews coming out of Cannes have been overwhelmingly positive. The Handmaiden hits select theatres on Oct. 14th; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.

    <<o. ?????????????????????????????????????????????????????:::::::!!br945p:….,.

    Hmm, did Sean keep the traditional Korean placement of the director’s name out of respect or because he forgot most of the FJ fanbase are Westerners?

  • Sean

    It just seems to be the most common way I see Korean names being written but I am always confused about it.

  • Flo Lieb

    I’ve actually never even heard someone referring to him as Chan-wook Park. Same with Kim Ki-duk.

  • Sam

    I’ve seen “Chan-wook Park” before, but definitely Park Chan-wook more commonly. Though I’ve never seen the Westernized Bong Joon-ho

    Sean, I would second an Korean film premium podcast but instead of limiting it to just Park movies, expand it to include other awesome Korean directors like Bong Joon-ho, Kim Jee-woon, Na Hong-jin, etc . That way you can include other great Asian films such as “The Chaser”, “A Bittersweet Life”, “Mother”, “The Host”, “A Tale of Two Sisters”, “Memories of Murder”, “I Saw the Devil”. Just to name a few.

  • RockJoker

    I’ve seen it. It was terrifying.

  • RockJoker

    Korean thriller premium would be awesome.

    Awesomely cut and scored trailer

  • Nick Poliskey

    I agree the trailer looks awesome, and is scored brilliantly, but the movie itself….BLAH.
