After making a name for himself as a horror director with a penchant for slow burn suspense, Ti West decided to change gears and apply some of that same sensibility to the old west. In a Valley of Violence joins a growing list of recent westerns from genre directors that includes The Hateful Eight and Bone Tomahawk, although based on the first trailer it doesn’t seem quite as bloody as one might expect. Ethan Hawke plays a drifter who is making a run for the Mexican border accompanied only by his dog Abbie. While passing through a town named Denton, he finds himself on the wrong side of the locals with a revelation from his past pushing him toward an inevitable confrontation. John Travolta, Karen Gillan, Taissa Farmiga and James Ransone also co-star. In a Valley of Violence hits select theatres and VOD on Oct. 21st; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.
