With all the hostility that has been directed towards the Ghostbusters reboot, everyone seems to have forgotten that Sony has a remake of another pretty iconic film coming out later this year. Antoine Fuqua’s The Magnificent Seven faces a similar uphill battle if it wants to justify its existence, although it does have the star power of both Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt working in its favour. Sony has released a new trailer this week that definitely highlights their presence while spending considerably less time with the other five team members. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, although it does feel like it’s trying a little too hard to put a contemporary spin on a western (it’s unclear if the movie will actually feature a hip hop soundtrack as well). The Magnificent Seven hits theatres on Sept. 23rd; check out the new trailer after the jump (along with a slightly different international trailer) and let us know what you think.

    Haven’t watched the trailer, but based on the image on the post, are they trying to sell this as a Tarantino flick?

    I think the international trailer is a little more coherent and subtle – less spoilery too – but I’ll see this movie based on either of them. If they pull it off as well as they do in these ads, it’ll be cool.

    And yeah, heavy Django-vibe, but I’m cool with it. Seems like fair game to me to make these badass westerns again. Credit to Tarantino for making it viable.

    I agree with your point about the international trailer, but to me, both trailers seem like mere gun ads. I didn’t feel any sense of fun or adventure as in both previous films.

    Well yeah, westerns can be read like that. But I think it should be allowed for filmmakers to not have to answer to politics, especially if they deliver genre entertainment. An overt amount of gun-fetichizing could destroy this film, but that’s not really what you’d expect from Hollywood.
